Good morning

Me aguardem. Muitas novidades nesta nova fase do meu blog.

VERBS, PREPOSITIONS AND EXPRESSIONS RELATED TO TRANSPORTATION

A preposição usada em inglês é BY. So:

I go to work BY car. I travel to the beach BY bus.

They are going to work by bus.

Agora, se você vai para o trabalho a pé, não é by foot, mas ON FOOT

Ônibus, taxis, trens, metrô em português nós tomamos. Please, não vá dizer que você “drink the bus”. O verbo DRINK é apenas no sentido de beber, ingerir líquidos. Para transportes usamos o verbo TAKE: They are taking te bus.

I take a bus to work. I usually take the subway to school.

He is driving.
I DRIVE to work.
I can drive a car but I can’t DRIVE a bus.

He is riding his motorcycle.

I usually RIDE my motorcycle to work, but sometimes I RIDE my bike.

Agora se você vai a pé, ou caminhando, simplesmente diga I WALK.

Outro verbos

I USUALLY TAKE THE PLANE TO RIO. I USUALLY TRAVEL TO RIO BY PLANE.

He is flying to New York.

I usually FLY to Rio.

Millions of people commute from home to work in the world every day.

I usually COMMUTE to work by bus.

I usually DRIVE my son to school.

She got a ride to work. (Ela conseguiu uma carona para o trabalho)

Can you give me a RIDE to the supermarket?

She is hitchhiking to the church.

I HITCHHIKED from Rio to São Paulo last vacation.

Agora tente entender as três frases abaixo. São expressões relacionadas com transportes.

The thieves drove off in a BMW.

The ship ran aground in the storm.

He accidentally ran over a rabbit.

A resposta está no site: http://www.learnenglish.de/vocabulary/transportverbs.htm

And you? How do you go to work?
How do you prefer to travel.
Have you ever travelled by ship? Would you like to?

See you soon.

MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY

JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS

Hey guys. It’s Xmas. It’s present time. It’s the celebration of the birth of Christ.

And at this special XMAS POST let’s learn some vocabulary related to Xmas.

CHRIST. Beautiful, isn’t it?

Well, this is the story of Santa Claus.
(Of course today he must find other alternatives as most people live in apartments or have houses with no chimneys).

What’s the transportaion of Santa Claus? The SLEIGHS (trenós) which are pulled by REINDEERS.

And of course during Xmas you must have a Xmas Tree.

And what do you say to your friends on Xmas time? MERRY CHRISTMAS.

How do you celebrate Xmas? In my house we have supper (ceia) around 10 o’clock. At midnight we sit around the Xmas Tree and distribute the presents.

When there were kids in the house (and when I was a kid) there was a Santa Claus who came and distributed the presents.
The tradition is a little different in The USA. The presents as distributed i the morning befores special breakfast with Xmas goodies (guloseimas) like French Toast (Rabanada).

And you how DO YOU celebrate it?

And to finish: a traditional Xmas song:

JINGLE BELLS. ( Em Portiguès SINOS DE BELÉM, eu acho)

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way

Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
A day or two agoI thought
I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side

The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh yeah
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

WELL YOU GUYS I WISH YOU ALL A VERY SPECIAL XMAS NIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

AMERICANS CAN PLAY SOCCER, BRAZILIANS CAN PLAY FOOTBALLL.

Did you understand the title? Entenderam o título?

Sabe qual a diferença entre SOCCER e FOOTBALL? Well, looong story.

Muitos alunos acham que CAN significa apenas PODER.

HABILIDADE

Guga CAN play tennis. (He has ability to play tennis, He know how to play tennis = Ele sabe/tenm condições/habilidade para jogar tênis.

But I CAN’T drive. (Can you believe it? I really CAN’T ) ( I don’t have the ability to drive)

CAN you play any instrument? ( Sabe ou não. qual instrumento?)

Simples, não?

E no passado? Aí usamos o Passado de CAN que é COULD.

When I was a teenager I COULDN’T dance very well, but now I CAN.

I COULD swim when I was 4 years old. But I COULDN’T speak until I was 5.

PERMISSÃO
CAN também é usado para pedir permissão. Lembra do MAY? Pois é, a mesma coisa.

- CAN I smoke here?
- Of course you CAN’T. This is a closed place. SHAME ON YOU!!!

- COULD I use your telephone?

E o COULD É usado para pedir favores:

- COULD you open the window, please? It’s too hot in here.

OK, FOLKS? Did you get it?

Oh, before I forget: SOCCER X FOOTBALL.

OUR futebol é chamado SOCCER nos Estados Unidos.

(MY GOOOOOOD!!! WHAT A CONFUSION.)
Bye guys, See you all soon.

MAY USE YOUR CELL PHONE?

MAY/MIGHT
Two more MODAL VERB for you: MAY and MIGHT

Incertezas? What do you mean?

Bom. Eu digo:

I am going to the movies tomorrow.

Agora eu digo: I MAY go to the movies tomorrow.

Agora eu digo:

I MIGHT go to the movies.

Take a look at the dialogues to practice.

Joey – Is Peter going to the beach with us?
Betty – He MIGHT go. It depends on his boss.
Joey – How come?
Betty – His boss MAY ask him to worl over weekend.
Joey – Let’s call him.
Betty – He MIGHT not be home now. He’s working late tonight.
OK? Did you understand it?

E se quisermos falar do passado?

Lá vai o velho HAVE para ajudar o MIGHT e o MAY a ter um passado.

See the dialogue:

-Has David traveled to Europe?
- He MIGHT HAVE traveled. I called his house and nobody answered. (Talvez ele tenha viajado
)
OK?
Well, mas o MAY tem um outro uso. Para pedir permissão (Bem formal)

Você quer usar o celular de alguém (Que coisa feia, vai colocar créditos no teu, man.)

- MAY I use your cell phone, please?
- Sure. Go ahead.

-MAY I call the United States? My girlfriend lives there.
- Sorry, man. But I don’t have credits enough to call abroad. (Para fora do país)

Então? Espero que esta postagem tenha ajudado você a entender um pouco o uso de MAY e MIGHT.
NEXT POST: CAN YOU HELP ME?

YOU SHOULDN’T SMOKE. IT’S BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH

O SHOULD é usado principalmente para dar conselhos.

Olhe o título do blog.

Look at the pictures and read the dialogues below:

A- I have a terrible headache.
B – Maybe you SHOULD take an aspirin.

A – I am very tired.
B – I think you SHOULD go home and relax.

The negative of SHOULD is SHOULDN’T

– You SHOULDN’T smoke.

– You SHOULDN’T speak Portuguese in the English class.

Now give advice/suggestion to the following: (Use the negative or affirmative)

1. I don’t have any money.

2. I would like to eat a good hamburger with fries.

3. I have a terrible toothache.

4. I am very stressed.

Suggested answers:
1. You should get a job.

2. You should go to Burgerland.

3. You should see a dentist.

4. You should take some days off. (Tirar uns dias de folga)

Is that OK? Did you get it?

And the past? Como no caso do MUST, o passado é formado com o have mais o participio do verbo. E no passado pode também indicar arrependimento.

Example: I SHOULD HAVE studied English. Now I can't get a job.

Situations.

I. You didn’t go to the Halloween party. It was a great party. Your friends come and say:

- You SHOULD HAVE GONE to the Halloween party. Everybody was there.

II. You went to Rio but you didn’t make a hotel reservation. All the cheap hotels were crowded. You think:

- I SHOULD HAVE MADE a reservation.

There are other uses of SHOULD but this are the most used.

AND DON’T FORGET: AFTER SHOULD WE NEVER USE TO.

See you guys next post. Have a good one.
