Hey guys. It’s Xmas. It’s present time. It’s the celebration of the birth of Christ.

And at this special XMAS POST let’s learn some vocabulary related to Xmas.

Vamos começar pela palavra CHRISTMAS: separe a plavra MAS e o que você encontra? CHRIST. Beautiful, isn’t it?

E como chama o velhinho que vem trazer os presentes na noite de natal?

Bem. Nos Estados Unidos ele originalmente era Saint Nicholas (São Nicolau).

Saint Nicholas era um bispo em Mira (cidade localizada no país que hoje é a Turquia) e que fazia milagres e costumava deixar moedas de presente para as pessoas que deixavam seus sapatos do lado de fora de casa.

Com o tempo as pessoas começaram a dizer Saint Nicholas muito rápido e foi se transformando em Santa Claus, que é como o Papai Noel é chamado hoje nos Estados Unidos.

Well, this is the story of Santa Claus.

Bem Santa Claus entregas presentes (delivers presents) entrando por uma chaminé (chimney). (Of course today he must find other alternatives as most people live in apartments or have houses with no chimneys).

What’s the transportaion of Santa Claus? The SLEIGHS (trenós) which are pulled by REINDEERS.

And of course during Xmas you must have a Xmas Tree.

And what do you say to your friends on Xmas time? MERRY CHRISTMAS.

How do you celebrate Xmas? In my house we have supper (ceia) around 10 o’clock. At midnight we sit around the Xmas Tree and distribute the presents.

When there were kids in the house (and when I was a kid) there was a Santa Claus who came and distributed the presents.

The tradition is a little different in The USA. The presents as distributed i the morning befores special breakfast with Xmas goodies (guloseimas) like French Toast (Rabanada).
